Heart of the Earth
Sanctuary & Rescue

Based in Cumberland, Maryland, HOTE was founded to be something more than just a shelter. It emerged as a sanctuary of hope, a voice for the voiceless, and a hub of collaborative rescue. Since joining the network of Best Friends Animal Society, HOTE has stood firm as a “rescue without borders,” fully committed to uniting with shelters, sanctuaries, and advocacy groups across states to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abandoned, neglected, and abused animals.
HOTE is recognized not only for its life-saving efforts in animal welfare, but also for its dedication to environmental consciousness and sustainable operations. The organization won Maryland’s Green Registry 2019 Leadership Award, and employs eco-friendly practices like non-toxic cleaning supplies and composting, and has been certified as a wildlife habitat through the National Wildlife Federation.
Every day, the HOTE team opens its doors to animals in need and to people who care. Whether nursing a neglected cat back to health, partnering with regional rescue networks to transport dogs to safety, or educating communities about animal rights and compassionate living, HOTE is driven by one central belief: every life matters, and no creature should be left behind.
With each adoption, each volunteer who gives their time, and each donation that sustains care, HOTE turns promise into action. The organization remains your ally in creating a world where every animal has a safe, loving place to call home.
